Post office in Winsted

Yesterday we went to the post office,which is close to NWCC. it was really useful and incredibly interesting to find out all those facts about mail in the USA!!! The man, who led us around, was really nice and he appreciated our attention))) He said we were better than kindergardeners and paying more attention))
Everything is organized there,which is important, because it is the same all over the US. I liked the fact, that if you have come from a different state to live in Connecticut,you can start your work right away and not be frustrated, because it is going to be all the same!!
So,that field trip was nice for us to go to,well,just like all others trips,that our lovely teachers are planning for us))

Today's class 4.29.10 ELSA

Today I learned that almost every state around Connecticut pay a tolls, except for Connecticut. And also that back in the days the property taxes were charge only for the front part of the house. so they build little front with BIG BACKS.

library visit

We went to the library, and we talked to the person in charge of that department. I thought us how to find books. He also told us that the were Cd's and cassette's that are really helpful to us, and the also gave us ours I.D. cards.

ESL class 4.29.10

I learned about the three different jobs like federal jobs, state jobs, and city jobs. We also talked about federal, state and city. Also different parks. and also bout the different ways we pay taxes.

Hey!

Instead of attending the class I went with my friend to the Bahamas! It was worth it! I really enjoyed it and I will never forget this trip :-) You should go there, too! I hope you had alot of fun too on your trip and learned important stuff about the history

Post Office

We enjoyed our tour of the Winsted Post Office. Our guide was very informative.

It was a beautiful spring day so we really enjoyed our walk to the Post Office.

There is a beautiful mural in the Winsted Post Office depicting people deciding on where the post office should be built. The mural is of a town green and some important buildings that were in the area in the 1800's.

Thank you Amy for the USPS Fun Facts. They really are fun!! Did you know that mail is delivered to the bottom of the Grand Canyon on mules??

The most isolated post office is in northern Alaska. The mail is the only link that the 300 people who live there have. The mail must be flown in as there are no roads to the town.

Fishing

Saturday morning I went fishing in Riverton. I caught four rainbow trout that I cooked for lunch. It was a beautiful day. My hobbies are fishing and reading books.

Finding interesting things during Earth Day:)

Earth Day is an international event and people should be aware of their envirnoment. This is a very popular day, and a very good oportunity to clean and organize your area. We celebrate this day also in Poland and thursday reminded me of past days. During this time we gather together and did some work next to the river. All of us know that during such events you can find many interesting things....and of course we found things. Some people are horrible to the nature, we found a lot of glass bottles, plastic bags, food containers, papers, but not only...The most strange thing was a pair of old, disgusting, smelly jeans, an old jacket and..........a dead mouse in a plastic bottle!! It was pretty amazing...but some people are strange...

Cleaning up on Earth Day.

On Thursday my whole class went to help clean garbage by the river in Winsted. It was a very nice and warm day so we had a really good time. Even though sometimes the garbage smelled bad, but at some point we didn't care because that cause was very helpful for the environment.

My experience in NCCC

My name is Olena i am from Ukraine and I am an au pair. I am an ESL3 student and i am glad to be able to visit NCCC for free and improve my English. I am so thankful to my teacher Amy for making interesting classes and being so patient to us. And also thankful to Northwestern Connecticut Community College for this opportunity. I feel like my English is better and better every day and one of the reason of my improving is ESL class. Here we also have some activities, the last one was Earth Day when we were helping our "Mother Earth" :)) We were cleaning the bank of Mad River. It was surprising for me to find so much trash. I hope that people will be more aware and considerate about taking care of nature.
It's my second year in USA and so far i am enjoing every day here.
